MAGNY COURS September 15 / 16 / 17th 2005

Patrick Chavanne Winner of the race and the Championship at Magny Cours

The final round of the ICGP 350 championship saw all the contenders making the trip down to Nevers for the Bol d’or at Magny Cours.

Qualifying was decided on Thursday with dry hot conditions seeing ICGP riders dominate the front row. Pole position was grabbed by Chris Rose from Jean-Paul Lecointe and championship leader Graham Read, with Patrick Chavanne and Steve Boam close by on the second row. Special mention must be made of a scintillating lap from Sandrine to take 15th spot ahead of many ICGP regulars.

With Friday morning damp and cold no- one improved on their times, so left everyone praying for dry race conditions on Saturday to avoid the slippery and unpredictable Magny Cours track.

Following Fridays rain, the race was delayed to 11.15, affording perfect track conditions, so no excuses for anyone.

The drama began on the sighting lap, when Read failed to appear, half way round his front brake disc inexplicably disintegrated, giving Graham no chance except a heavy fall, and heart-braking disappointment . Back on the grid Chavanne , Rose and Boam were busy calculating what was required to win the championship, so suddenly it was wide open with Rose and Chavanne needing to win the race outright with Boam needing to win and Rose and Chavanne finishing 4th and 5th .

New Masters champion Arnie Fletcher also failed to make the start line, with a crank breaking on the warm up lap.

When the red lights went out it was Chavanne who led Rose, Boam and Lecointe with this group breaking away and this is how it stayed for the first 5 laps with fast close racing entertaining the crowds. With one lap to go Lecointe had dropped away and it was going to be anyone’s race with Chavanne holding a slender lead from the chasing pair. At Adelaide Rose attempted to out-brake the leader, but locked the rear back wheel which was to prove costly. The three swept over the line in close formation – Chavanne, Rose, Boams, a fantastic end to a close and competitive championship
